5 things that’ll make 2012 great

by Jason Ward

We’re on the threshold of a new year.

There’s plenty of reason for excitement, but if you watch stuff like this or this, you might be thinking our civilization and way of life are doomed.

I say nuts to that. Personally, 2011 was an awful year. I’m glad to stick a fork in this one come Sunday, and I think you should too, especially knowing what good stuff is on the horizon.

To pick you up before 2011 go-goes, here are five reasons 2012 is going to be a great year:

Seasonal viewings – 5 not-quite Christmas movies

by Jason Ward

With the holidays nearly upon us, you might already be full of festive cheer.

Then again, you may have a positively diabetic reaction to all the sugary sweetness that Christmas can bring – especially in the entertainment of the season.

Yes, this is the time of year about togetherness and family and the spirit of giving and blah, blah, blah – but you don’t want to be beaten over the head with such sentiments as you try to get into the mood.

Tonight (December 22nd) is the longest night of the year. Why not fill it with a few Christmas-y movies that don’t cause sugar comas when consumed?

Here are five prime choices for your holiday entertainment:

Another year older, a new one almost begun…

by Jason Ward

Wow.  What a year.

To say this one’s been a challenge is putting it lightly.

You may have noticed that there have been only a few updates on the site of late, primarily my work from Biff Bam Pop!  There are a few reasons for that.

Back in October, I took a day job in order to make ends meet.  The economy being what it is, I’ve had to make sure to keep a roof over my head first and foremost.  As well, I’ve been saving money to invest in some infrastructure to help build my personal business.  The job has taken up a lot of time and has forced me to make some significant lifestyle changes, and that’s resulted in a lot less time for my creative pursuits.

I’m currently at a crossroads in my career.  I don’t know if working in radio broadcasting will ever be part of my future again.  As much as I’d love to continue with it, the radio industry continues to change at a dramatic pace.  Both the number of jobs available and the quality of pay are dwindling. Maybe it’s because I’m over the age of 30, but fighting for wages under $30,000 a year just doesn’t hold the appeal it used to.

My first love has always been the written word.  Short stories, novels, movie scripts, journalism – all of it.  I’ve spent a lot of time over the last few months working on a number of projects and I’m ready to take them to the next level.  I’ve just got to find a way to do it while also keeping said roof over said noggin.

Because I need some time to think and figure out the next step, I’m going to take the rest of December off.  I’ll be spending time with some friends and loved ones to get a little perspective, as well as talking to some potential business partners about future endeavors.

To put it simply, I’m not sure what’s next.

What I do know is that whatever may come, it’ll be something new and different.

Let me just take the time to thank you for coming to visit my little website.  Your feedback and out-of-the-blue notes just to say hi are always appreciated.

Oh, and in case I don’t get to see or speak to you personally…

Who watches out for Watchmen 2?

by Jason Ward

Let’s make this point clear right away:
There shouldn’t be any prequels or sequels to Watchmen.
The seminal work by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons was originally released as a twelve-issue miniseries in 1986/1987 and, once collected, became one of the most highly regarded graphic novels of all time. Along with Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns and Art Spiegelman’s Maus, Watchmen remains a defining example of comic art in the modern era.
It’s a work that stands alone and should be left alone, but recent news indicates that we’ll be seeing some new Watchmen material in the very near future.

December film preview

by Jason Ward

It’s the last month of the year already?!?

Hard to believe, I know, if you’ve done a good job of ignoring all the red, gold and green covering malls everywhere (with apologies to the Culture Club).

The march to the holiday season brings not only mass consumerism gone mad, but a chance to forget your troubles at the local multiplex with a movie or two.

To help make your December more cinematically awesome, here are 5 films to see at the box office this month.
